Ma Yulin was a jinshi of the Ming dynasty. His courtesy name was Dezheng; he was second in birth order, a native of Changzhou County, and held household registration in Kunshan County of Suzhou Prefecture, Zhili.
Life
His examination year is variously given as 1547 and as the Dingchou examination in the fifth year of the Wanli era (1577); he placed 93rd in the Yingtian prefectural examination, 99th in the metropolitan examination, and 187th in the third class of the jinshi examination.
His great-grandfather was Ma Shou and his grandfather Ma Huai. His father was Ma Longguang, his mother was Wang, and his wife was Gu; his elder brother was Ma Yuke, and his younger brothers were Ma Yutang, Ma Yuying, Ma Tenghuang, and Ma Feihuang.
Writings and literary activity
The thirty-eight-volume 《靜觀堂文稿》 is associated with him.
His literary work included a preface for a book by Ai Zhou and epitaphs for Zhang Dafu and Gu Mengyu. He also wrote sacrificial texts for Wang Shimao, Zhang Juzheng, Zeng Shengwu, Yu Ruoying, Zhi Keda, Gu Yunyuan, and Zhang Dong, as well as colophons for books and paintings by Shen Zhou.
His farewell writings included poems and prefaces for Wang Shixi, Shen Yingkui, Fan Yuchong, and Liu Yinglong; he also sent congratulations to Wang Shizhen.
He wrote to Gu Shaofang, Wang Shizhen, Wang Shimao, Zou Yuanbiao, Shen Maoxue, Yu Ruoying, Wang Bingxuan, Gong Jiachen, Li Yaomin, and Li Weizhen. Other letters were addressed to Wu Zhilong, Ma Mingluan, Sun Wei, Xu Taishi, Xu Xianqing, Zhang Dafu, Chen Tailai, Tang Pingyin, Huang Zhong, Guan Zhidao, Liu Yinglong, Gu Yunyuan, Tao Yunyi, and Lü Zhaoxiong.
He also replied to Gu Shaofang, Li Yaomin, Chen Yunsheng, Fu Pei, Guan Zhidao, and Tao Yunyi, and presented poems and prose to Wang Xijue, Zhi Keda, Ye Mengxiong, Guan Zhidao, and Gu Mengyu. He inscribed a painting by Tang Yin and praised Fan Yuchong’s administrative achievements.
