Liu Jiangsun (1257–?), a writer of the late Song and early Yuan, was a native of Luling. His courtesy name was Shangyou, his literary name Yangwu, and he was also known as Xiaoxu. He was the son of Liu Chenweng (1232–1297).

Life

As a young man he was regarded as slow-witted, but he later became exceptionally perceptive. His career included the titles of instructor and professor, as well as registrar and academy head; he served as an instructor at Yanping and as head of the Linting Academy. In the guichou year of the Huangqing era (1313), he was recommended for appointment as registrar of Guangze, alternatively given as Jiangle.

Literary work

His prose was considered more rugged and unconventional than that of his father, Liu Chenweng; Wu Cheng, who wrote the preface to his collection, described it as broad and flowing, with a style of its own. Another assessment compared his succession to Liu Chenweng’s literary legacy with “Zizhan succeeding Mingyun.”

He was the author of Yangwuzhai ji. He exchanged poetry with Wu Cheng and wrote a postface on his father Liu Chenweng’s calligraphy. The collection includes prefaces, farewell prefaces, postfaces to poetry and prose, epitaphs, spirit-way inscriptions, tomb inscriptions, biographical notices, sacrificial texts, school records, and shrine records. It also contains prefaces he wrote for works by Liu Chenweng, Liu Shen, Liu Yueshen, and others.
