Huang Wan (1480–1554) was a Ming-dynasty thinker and a Neo-Confucian of the Yangming school. His courtesy names are given as Shuxian and Zongxian; his sobriquets include Jiuan and Jiuanjushi, while Shilong is recorded as an alternate name. His native-place entries give Huangyan and Taiping.
Life
His father appears under two forms, Huang Gongbu and Huang Gongfu, and his son was Huang Chengwen. His educational status is given as jiansheng in the yinjian category.
From 1510 to 1512, he served as dushi in the Houjun Dudu Fu; from 1522 to 1526, he was jingli of the Nanjing Duchayuan, and in 1526 held the post of Gongbu Yingshansi yuanwailang. He also held a Nanjing Xingbu yuanwailang appointment.
Between 1527 and 1528, his offices included Dali si zuo shaoqing, Guanglu si shaoqing, Hanlin yuan shijiang xueshi, Zhanshi fu shao zhanshi, Zhanshi fu zhanshi, jingyan jiangguan, and zuanxiu guan.
From 1528 to 1533 he served as Nanjing Libu you shilang, from 1533 to 1535 as Libu zuo shilang, and in 1535 as zhi gongju guan. In 1539 he served as Libu shangshu, Hanlin yuan xueshi, and Annan zhengshi.
Learning and literary associations
He studied under Wang Shouren and Xie Duo; his intellectual affiliation was with Yangming-school Neo-Confucianism, and he is also identified as a thinker. His literary associations included writing a preface to a work by Xia Yan, epitaphs for Liang Gu and Xue Jun, and biographies of Zheng Shanfu, Wang Shuying, Chen Zhuang, Wang Qian, Zhang Chi, Zhang Ji, and Dong Yun.
He also composed sacrificial texts for Li Dongyang, Wang Shouren, Xie Qian, Xie Duo, Zhang Yuanzhen, Chen Lin, Zhang Ding, and Xi Shu. He wrote additional sacrificial texts for Dai Deru, Xu Ai, Fang Hao, Wang Qi, Zhu Jie, Yu Ben, and Han Bangwen, as well as a farewell piece for Xie Duo, described as a farewell poem or preface.
Works
His works include Jiaxun, Sishu Wujing Yuangu Mingdao bian, Sigutang biji, Shilong zouyi, Shilong ji in 28 juan, and Lun xingyu shu.
