Zhang Qieying (1792–1860; alternative accounts give 1842 or leave the death year unknown) was a Qing-dynasty woman poet and ci writer. Her courtesy name was Mengti (孟緹), also written Mengti with the character 媞; her native place is given as Wujin, Jiangsu, and also as Yanghu (present-day Changzhou).

Life

She was the eldest daughter of Zhang Qi, a county magistrate, and Tang Yaoqing. Zhang Qi lived 1764–1833 and Tang Yaoqing 1763–1831. Her younger brother was Zhang Yaosun (1808–1863); her younger sisters were Zhang Shanying (1795–1824), Zhang Lunying (1798–1850), and Zhang Wanying (1800–1881), and a granddaughter is identified as Wu Lanwan.

After her marriage, her husband’s name appears in several forms—Wu Tingqian, Wu Tingzhen, Wu Zan, and the incomplete Wu Ting□—and he was from Changshu; his office is variously given as zhushi or yuanwailang of the Board of Punishments.

She was widely read in the Classics and histories, excelled in poetry and ci, and was praised for the elegance of her ci style. She also wrote prefaces for books by Yuan Jia and Jiang Shuze; Wu Dexuan and others wrote prefaces for her books, while Bao Shichen and others supplied postscripts. Li Zhaoluo, Yao Fuzeng, and others contributed title inscriptions to Danju xuan shi chugao (澹蘜軒詩初稿), and she exchanged poems with Wu Zan.

Works

Her studio name appears in three forms: Danju xuan (澹菊軒), Danju xuan (澹蘜軒), and Danju xuan (澹鞠軒). Associated works include Danju xuan shi chugao (澹蘜軒詩初稿; also written 澹菊軒詩初稿, four juan), Danju xuan shigao (澹蘜軒詩稿, one juan), Danju xuan ci (澹蘜軒詞, one juan), Danju xuan ci (澹菊軒詞, one juan), Danju xuan ji (澹菊軒集 and 澹鞠軒集), and Guochao lienü shilu (國朝列女詩錄), also recorded as Guochao lienü shilüe (國朝列女詩略); the combined title Danju xuan shigao·ci (澹蘜軒詩稿·詞) is also found.
