Luo Wenli (1527–1608; another dating places his birth in 1529, calculated as sixty-three years before a death in 1592) was a Ming official, scholar, and writer. He was styled Ziben; Zuanting is variously presented as a style name or sobriquet, and Wushijiu (“Fifty-Nine”) as a generation rank. English aliases also include Jia Wenli. He was from Zhejiang’s Zhuji County, specifically Zhongying village in Fengqiao.
Life
His great-grandfather was 駱璡; his grandfather was 駱鳳誥, his father 駱驂, his mother 鄭氏, and his wife 樓氏. In 1555 he placed tenth in the Zhejiang yi-mao provincial examination and became a juren; in 1565 he ranked sixty-fifth in the metropolitan examination and received the 106th place in the third class at the palace examination. An examination entry also lists him as a shengyuan, with the number 10 attached to that qualification.
After serving as 兵部觀政, he was appointed 行人司行人 in August 1565 and selected as Nanjing 刑科給事中 in September 1568. As Nanjing 刑科給事中, he was repeatedly outspoken. In November 1569, after submitting a memorial on policy matters and offending the emperor, he was framed by eunuchs and demoted to magistrate of Chuxiong Prefecture in Yunnan; in July 1572 he was promoted to Yangzhou 府推官.
In January 1573 he was promoted to Nanjing 工部主事, and in April 1574 to Nanjing 兵部郎中; in February 1577 he became the Yunnan circuit assistant intendant of the Erhai route, stationed at Yaozhou, and went home on mourning leave. In June 1583 he was reappointed to Fujian and in October promoted to vice commissioner in Huguang; his offices also include Yunnan 右參議, Fujian 左參議, and 湖廣提刑按察使司副使. In May 1586 he sought retirement to care for an elderly parent, and in October 1592 he was recalled to serve as vice commissioner in Guangdong. The office list also includes 團練副使.
Works and associations
His works include 《萬一樓集》; bibliographic titles give 《萬一樓集》 as sixty-one juan, 《萬一樓外集》 as ten juan, and also list 《恭遇》.
《萬一樓外集》 includes letters addressed to 許孚遠, 海瑞, 陳吾德, 朱賡, 耿定向, 朱衡, and 孫如法; it also has letters addressed to 張瀚, 郭正域, 邵陛, and 姚汝循. It further includes replies to 許孚遠, 薛應旂, 高拱, 屠隆, 陳吾德, and 朱衡.
Luo wrote prefaces for works by 陳沂, 夏良勝, and 顧大典, composed a farewell piece for 徐大任, and presented poetry and prose to 池浴德, 游震得, and 盛時泰. He also sent congratulations to 劉儁, 林庭機, and 潘晟, and composed inscriptions, accounts, and names for buildings associated with 劉傑 and 劉維.
