Zhang Lüxiang (also rendered Zhang Luxiang; 1611–1674) was a Neo-Confucian scholar and thinker of the late Ming and early Qing. His courtesy name is given as Kaofu in two character forms and also as Yuanfu; he was from Tongxiang, Zhejiang. His family had long been settled in Yangyuan Village, and scholars called him Yangyuan xiansheng; other names include Nianzhi, Yangyuan, and Jiren.

Life and thought

Under the Ming, he was a shengyuan, a county-school student of Tongxiang, and studied with Liu Zongzhou and Sun Taiheng. His learning took Ludong as its guide and followed the ideal “benevolence as dwelling, righteousness as root; ordered speech and conduct.” In later life he adhered exclusively to Cheng–Zhu learning, valued earnest practice, rejected empty talk, and held that farming and study should not be set against each other; while teaching, he also applied himself to farming and breeding. He was deeply versed in the Classics but did not pursue exegetical commentary.

His father was Zhang Mingjun. His relatives included a nephew, Zhang Sijiu; he had two sons, Zhang Weigong and Zhang Yujing, and a stepson, Zhang Shengwen. He was friends with Wang Xichan, Lü Liuliang, Liu Zhuo, Wu Fanchang, and He Rulin; his students included Lü Baozhong and Yao Hu.

Works

He also occasionally composed verse, and his writings include *Yangyuan beiwang lu*.

His authored works include *Duyi biji* (one juan), *Chuxue beiwang* (two juan), *Yangyuan xiansheng yanxing jianwen lu* (two juan), *Yangyuan xiansheng xun menren yu* (three juan), *Yuanxue ji* (one juan), *Wenmu* (one juan), and *Duhou yu ouji*.
