Ling Zhiyuan (1831–1852) was a Qing-dynasty woman writer. Her name is also written 淩祉媛, and her romanized forms include Chaiyuan and Zhiyuan. Her courtesy name is given as 茝媛 or 茝沅; she was from Qiantang (錢塘; also written 錢唐).
Life
Her father was Ling Yong (凌詠), who held the title 光祿寺署正; she married Ding Bing (丁丙; 1831–1899), a Jiangsu 候補知縣. Her maternal uncle was Zhu Cheng (朱城), her paternal uncle Ling Yu (凌譽), and her older sister Ling Qiangyuan (凌薔媛).
She was intelligent from birth, mastered musical modes in childhood, and could compose verse. After her marriage, she often returned to her parental home to care for her mother, who suffered from wind illness and needed help with movement; when her mother's illness became severe, she prayed to take her place. Soon afterward, her mother recovered, but Ling Zhiyuan died at the age of twenty-two.
Writings and literary connections
Her works include 《翠螺閣詩稿》; other titles associated with her include 《翠螺閣詩詞稾》 in five juan, 《舞鏡集》 in one juan, 《翠螺閣詞》 in one juan, and 《小檀欒室彙刻閨秀詞》, a ten-collection, one-hundred-work, one-hundred-juan compilation.
Prefaces associated with her writings were written by Wu Zao (吳藻), Wei Qiansheng (魏謙升), Yu Kexiang (于克襄), Gao Bingjiu (高炳麔), Zhu Zhi (朱智), Zhu Cheng (朱城), Guan Ying (關瑛), Gao Wangzeng (高望曾), and Gao Xueyuan (高學沅). Postscripts were written by Ding Bing (丁丙), Zhuang Zhongfang (莊仲方), Jin Shengwu (金繩武), and Ling Yu (凌譽).
