Zou Weilian (鄒維璉; 1586–1635), also recorded as Ju Weilian, was an official of the Ming dynasty. His courtesy name was Dehui (德輝), also recorded as Deyao (德耀), and his art name was Feishi (匪石). He was a native of Xinchang.

Life

He took the jinshi degree in the thirty-fifth year of the Wanli reign (1607), placing 227th in the third class, and was appointed judge (推官) of Yanping Prefecture. He later served in the Ministry of War at Nanjing, rising from bureau secretary (主事) to vice director (員外郎) of the Bureau of Military Organisation.

In the third year of the Tianqi reign (1623) he became director (郎中) of the Bureau of Military Organisation in the capital; his subsequent posts included director of the Bureau of Merit (稽勳司) and of the Bureau of Assessments (考功司) in the Ministry of Personnel, and director of the Bureau of Military Organisation at Nanjing. He impeached Wei Zhongxian and was removed from the official register.

In the second year of the Chongzhen reign (1629) he was appointed right assistant commissioner (參議) of the Office of Transmission at Nanjing and promoted to vice minister of the Court of the Imperial Stud (太僕寺少卿). He later rose to be right vice minister of War (兵部右侍郎) and right assistant censor-in-chief (右僉都御史), and served as grand coordinator (巡撫) of Fujian.

Associates and correspondence

Zou wrote biographies of Huang Zunsu, Zhao Nanxing, Chen Bangzhan and Zhu Wubi, and a tomb inscription for Zuo Guangdou. He also composed sacrificial addresses for Yang Lian, Zuo Guangdou, Wei Dazhong, Zhou Shunchang, Huang Zunsu, Zhao Nanxing and Zhu Wubi. He wrote prefaces for works by Xu Dengying, Tao Lüzhong and Liu Jidong, a colophon for a portrait of Zhou Qiyuan, and inscriptions naming buildings associated with Zhou Shunchang.

His letters to Huang Zunsu, Dong Qichang, Ye Xianggao and Zhao Nanxing, together with his replies to Chen Bangzhan, Huang Zunsu, Gao Panlong, Zhu Wubi and Chen Tailai, are preserved in the Daguanlou ji (達觀樓集). Wei Dazhong, Yao Ximeng, Cheng Jiming, Fang Yingxiang and Xie Tingzan also wrote to him, and he exchanged letters with He Qiaoyuan. After his death Shen Youlong composed a sacrificial address for him, and Chen Ding wrote his biography.

Works

Zou was the author of the Yuanxue bian (願學編) and the Huanyou ji (宦遊集); a collection entitled Daguanlou ji (達觀樓集) runs to twenty-four juan.
