Luo Dahong (1542–?), a Ming-dynasty politician. His courtesy name was Gongkuo; his sobriquets were Kuangwu and Kuanghu, and he was ranked eighth in birth order. The form 羅公廓 is also attested. He came from Jishui, Jiangxi, more fully identified as Jishui County in Ji'an Prefecture.

Life

His great-grandfather was 羅鼎祥, his grandfather was 羅應麟, and his father was 羅琛; his mother was 歐陽氏, and his stepmother was 蕭氏. His elder brothers were 羅大紳, 羅大綝, 羅秉忠, and 羅秉直, while his younger brothers were 羅大綸 and 羅秉智. His wife was 周氏, and his sons were 羅邦治, 羅邦教, and 羅邦禮.

His early educational status was that of a 生員, and he later became a 鄉貢舉人. He placed twenty-first in the gui-you provincial examination; in 1586, in the bingxu metropolitan examination, he placed fourteenth and received the third position in the third class of the jinshi degree. After obtaining the jinshi degree in 1586, he held the posts of 禮部觀政 and 行人司行人; in August 1591 he was transferred to 禮科給事中. He also served as 縣典史 at Jieyang during the Wanli era.

On taking office he submitted the several-thousand-character 《定制書》, at a time when the question of establishing the crown prince had remained unresolved. In September 1591 he impeached Grand Secretary Shen Shixing for dereliction of duty. The Wanli Emperor, angered by the impeachment, dismissed him to commoner status; Shen resigned that month. During the Tianqi era, Luo was posthumously granted the rank of 光祿寺少卿.

Learning and works

He studied lixue (理學) under Xu Yongjian (徐用檢), also known as Xu Luyuan (徐魯源), and lectured with Zou Yuanbiao in retirement. People of Jishui grouped him with the local worthies Luo Lun and Luo Hongxian as the “Three Luos.”

《廬山講義》 and 《青原格言》 are credited to him as author. The twelve-volume 《紫原文集》 is also associated with him, but its authorship is unspecified; a work titled 《羅大觸文集》 is also said to have survived.
