Zhang Xie (張燮; 1574–1640), also written 張爕, was a scholar of the Ming dynasty. His courtesy name was Shaohe (紹和) and his sobriquet Haibinyishi (海濱逸史); he also used the names Feiyun zhuren (霏雲主人), Qunyulou (羣玉樓), Wanshishanfang (萬石山房), Cangzhenguan (藏真館) and Feiyunju (霏雲居). He was a native of Longxi in Fujian (now part of Zhangzhou).
Life
In 1594, the twenty-second year of the Wanli era, he passed the provincial examination and became a juren. Of quick intelligence and wide reading, he formed a literary society at the foot of Mount Zhi (芝山), and with Jiang Mengyu, Gao Kezheng, Lin Maogui and others was counted among the “Seven Talents” (七才子). Huang Daozhou held him in high regard, and his collected works include a letter addressed to Zhang.
His birth and death years are given as 1574 and 1640, though a birth year of 1567 has also been inferred by reckoning back twenty-seven years from the year of his provincial examination.
Literary relations
He wrote prefaces for works by Nan Juyi, Tu Yizhen and Xu 𤊹; a biography of Zhou Qiyuan; and sacrificial and biographical writings for Jiang Mengyu, Cai Fuyi and Wang Yinglin, as well as epitaphs, temple, school and shrine inscriptions and farewell prefaces. He also exchanged poems and writings with Jiao Hong and others.
Works
His writings include Dongxi yang kao (東西洋考) and Feiyun ju ji (霏雲居集); a collection titled Qunyu lou ji (羣玉樓集) in eighty-four juan is also recorded. His works are listed in the Siku quanshu zongmu tiyao (四庫全書總目提要), juan 71.
