Liu Yueshen (born 1260) was a Yuan-dynasty scholar and writer from Jishui. His zi was Gaozhong, he used the sobriquet Shenzhai, and scholars called him Master Shenzhai.
Life
By recommendation, he was summoned as deputy supervisor of Confucian schools in the Liaoyang Branch Secretariat but did not take up the post. He later received appointment as a prefectural judge and retired; the place-name appears as 太和州 or 泰和州.
His learning and conduct earned recognition at the time, and Liu Chenweng and Wu Cheng held him in high regard.
Literary work
His prose was described as austere, pure, fluent, and clear, and he was ranked with Liu Shen and Long Renfu.
His collected works are known as *Shenzhai ji* (《申齋集》), also recorded as *Shenzhai wenji* (《申齋文集》). The works include book prefaces, epitaphs, sacrificial texts, spirit-path steles, tomb inscriptions, farewell prefaces, letters, and colophons; recorded titles include 《張仲舉集序》, 《許獻臣女教書序》, 《洛陽楊友直家譜序》, 《祭草廬先生吳公文》, and 《題吳草廬真贊》.
His exchanges with Wu Cheng included 《送吳草廬赴國子監丞序》 and 《答吳草廬書》. He also corresponded with Yu Ji, Fan Peng, and Zhang Jinglu; Liu Jiangsun wrote 《送劉岳申序》 for him, and Liu Shen wrote 《送劉高仲考試武昌》.
Family
His wife was Zou Shi (鄒氏), who died in 1337, and his father-in-law was Zou Tianji (鄒天濟). His sons were Liu Wenchang (劉文昌), the eldest, and Liu Wenhua (劉文華), the second; his sons-in-law were Lan Yuzhen (藍玉振) and Lan Sishun (藍思順).
