Liu Feng was a Ming official; he was also a book collector. His courtesy names were Ziwei and Wenqi. He was also known as Liu Ziwei; his birth-order designation was Yi. His place of origin is given in several forms: Suzhou Prefecture, Yuanhe, Changzhou, and Changzhou Prefecture.

Life

His family relationships included his great-grandfather Liu Tang, grandfather Liu Xiang, father Liu Mei, mother Wu, stepmother Yu, and wife Gu.

His examination credentials included shengyuan (rank 71) and xianggong juren (rank 29); in the twenty-third year of the Jiajing reign he obtained the jinshi degree, third class, third place. He was appointed Zhongshu Sheren, promoted to Jiancha Yushi, served as inspector in Henan, and returned after tendering a resignation; he also held Fu Tuiguan, Ancha Shisi Qianshi, and Ancha Si Jianxiao. The Fu Tuiguan post was associated with Xinghua Prefecture, while Ancha Shisi Qianshi and Ancha Si Jianxiao were associated with the Henan Provincial Administration Commission.

He maintained a large household library, studied diligently, and had a broad memory; he was also a book collector.

Works and literary connections

His works include Xu Wu Xianxian zan, Zazu, and Ziwei ji; other titles are Liu Ziwei ji (32 juan) and Taixia cao (20 juan).

In his literary exchanges, he wrote prefaces for books by Huangfu Fang, Wang Shizhen, and Tang Zhen. Wang Shizhen and Tu Long wrote prefaces for his books; Xu Xianqing wrote a preface to his poetry and prose, and Liu Feng supplied a title inscription for a book by Tang Zhen.

He wrote a tomb inscription for Wang Huai and a biography of Liu Zhuo. He composed funeral texts for Qu Jingchun, Huangfu Fang, Fan Weiyi, and Liu Zhuo; he also wrote a congratulatory text for Zeng Shengwu, a temple stele inscription for Lu Xiang, a spirit-way stele for Jiang Rubi, and elegies for Huangfu Lian and Li Panlong.

He presented poems and prose to Huangfu Xiao, Huangfu Fang, Wen Jia, Zhou Tianqiu, Fan Weiyi, Zhang Fengyi, and Dong Fen, and received such gifts from Wu Ziyu and Xie Zhaoshen. On parting occasions he composed farewell pieces for Huangfu Fang, Zhang Jiayin, Li Yi, Ling Yunyi, and Wei Xueli, and received one from Yuan Hongdao. He sent congratulations to Qian Gu.

His correspondence included letters sent to Tu Long, Yuan Huang, Hua Shanshu, and Wei Xueli, and letters received from Li Panlong, Wang Shizhen, Tu Long, Yuan Hongdao, Wang Daokun, Wu Ziyu, Xu Xianqing, Mei Dingzuo, Zhao Yongxian, and Fan Shouji; he also received replies from Tu Long, Tang Xianzu, Yu Yin, Xu Xianqing, and Mei Dingzuo.
