Ren Zhaolin (d. 1796) was a native of Zhenze in Jiangsu during the Qing dynasty. His courtesy name was Wentian; Xinzhai is variously treated as a second courtesy name and as a sobriquet. He was also known as Ren Tinglin, and used Linwu, Linwushanren, Zhuju, Youzhuju, and Suigutang as other names.
Life
He was a zhusheng and also a student of the Imperial Academy. In the first year of the Jiaqing reign (the bingchen year, 1796), he was selected as xiaolian fangzheng but declined because he had to support a parent. He established Lianjing Jingshe, where he lectured on the Classics and practical statecraft. His wife was Zhang Yunzi; his clan elder was Ren Dachun (1738–1789), and his second son was Ren Changjian (1766–1820).
Ren Zhaolin was a friend of Yu Xiaoke and wrote prefaces for works by Zhang Fen, Zhu Zongshu, Zhang Yunzi, Shen Xiang, You Danxian, and Wang Qiong.
He also wrote prefaces for works by Shen Xiang, Cai Zhiding, Lei Chongxiao, Cai Zhiming, Zhang Xueren, Gu Heqing, and Ren Changjian, and supplied a postscript to Jiang Zhu's work and postscripts to Ji Yaonan's books and paintings.
Learning and writings
His works include 夏小正注, 字林考逸補正, 述記, and 有竹居集; other listings give 竹居集 and 心齋集, while 夏小正注 appears as 夏小正補注 in four juan.
He is credited with 簫譜 in one juan, 夏小正補注 in four juan, 三蒼考逸補正 in one and two juan, 聲音表 in one juan, 弦哥古樂譜 in one juan, and 虎阜志 in ten juan.
He is also credited with compiling 尚書大傳, 書序, 詩序, 韓詩外傳, 大戴禮記, 夏小正, 樂記, 春秋繁露, 說文, and 蒼頡篇; other compiled titles include 小爾雅, 釋名, 莊子, 韓非子, 淮南子, and 世說新語.
