Lin Wenjun (1487–1536) was a Ming-dynasty official and jinshi degree holder. His courtesy name was Ruying (汝英), his studio name Fangzhai (方齋), and his posthumous name is given as Wenxiu (文修), also written 文脩; he came from Putian, Xinghua Prefecture, Fujian, and was recorded as number two in birth order.

Life

His great-grandfather was 林子, his grandfather 林僴, his father 林廷諭, his mother 張氏, and his wife 朱氏. Early in life he held shengyuan status; in 1507 he came first in the Fujian provincial examination of the dingmao cycle and became the jieyuan, and in 1511 he placed 128th in the xinwei metropolitan examination and received the second-class, 110th jinshi rank.

After obtaining the jinshi degree, he was selected as a shujishi and appointed a compiler in the Hanlin Academy. In the second year of the Jiajing era (1523), in the fifth month, he was restored to his former post; in the fourth year, after completing the compilation of the Veritable Records of the Wuzong Emperor, he was promoted to Right Assistant in the Eastern Palace, and in the eighth year he became a compiler of the Da Ming Huidian.

In the ninth year of the Jiajing era he was promoted to libationer of the Nanjing Directorate of the Imperial Academy; in the eleventh year he was transferred to the Beijing Directorate; in the thirteenth year he was promoted to right vice minister of the Nanjing Ministry of Rites, and in the fourteenth year transferred to right vice minister of the Nanjing Ministry of Personnel. His highest office is variously given as vice minister of the Nanjing Ministry of Revenue and right vice minister of the Nanjing Ministry of Personnel. He died in the fifteenth year of the Jiajing era (1536) and was posthumously named Wenxiu.

Writing and associations

He was described as skilled in writing. His works are listed as 《方齋存稿》, in ten juan, and 《方齋詩文集》. He wrote prefaces for books by 尹襄 and 虞守愚, postscripts for 柯維熊’s books and paintings, and prefaces for the poetry and prose of 姚鏌 and 費宷.

He composed epitaphs for 杭濟, 姚鳴鸞, 馮翱, 熊蘭, 鄧顯麒, and 戴祥, as well as sacrificial texts for 林俊 and 陳琳. He also composed an elegy for 呂柟, a spirit-way stele and an academy record for 湛若水, and a shrine record for 何文淵; epitaphs for him were composed by 費寀 and 龔用卿. 湛若水 praised his integrity, while 茅宰 praised his administrative achievements.

He wrote farewell messages, parting poems, or prefaces for 鄭岳, 邊貢, 張鵬, 席春, 劉源清, 王軏, 潘珍, and 劉世揚, and wrote the same kind of texts for 初杲, 洪珠, 柯維熊, 唐胄, 項喬, 黃潤, 鄒守愚, 詹珪, and 顧珀. At parting he received a farewell piece from 龔用卿 and poems and prose from 呂柟. He sent congratulations to 王軏, 王宗源, 陳洙, and 費宷, and presented poems and prose to 呂柟, 黃鞏, 方璘, 王道, 茅宰, 倫文敍, 黃重, 聞人詮, 蔡潮, and 劉龍.
