Gui Maoyi (1762–1832) was a Qing-dynasty woman poet. Her courtesy name was Peishan and her sobriquet was Yushannvshi; her native place is given as Changshu in Jiangsu, with Shanghai also proposed.

Life

Her father, Gui Chaoxu, was a circuit intendant, and her mother was Li Xinjing. She married Li Xuehuang, whose status is variously given as jiansheng and zhusheng.

Gui Maoyi excelled in poetry and ci lyric, and was also accomplished in painting. She and Xi Peilan were close friends in women’s literary circles, exchanged verse, and Gui Maoyi became known in the arts. She traveled through Jiangsu and Zhejiang as a tutor in women’s schools and, in later life, settled in Shanghai.

Works and literary relations

Her named works include 《繡餘吟》, 《聽雪詞》, and 《繡餘小草》; the latter two are each listed as one juan.

The associated bibliography also contains 《繡餘續草》 in five juan, 《三續草》 in one juan, 《二餘草》, 《再續草》 in one juan, 《四續草》 in one juan, and 《五續草》, as well as 《國朝閨閣詩鈔》 in one hundred kinds and one hundred juan and 《小檀欒室彙刻閨秀詞》 in ten series, one hundred kinds, and one hundred juan.

Gui Maoyi wrote prefaces for works by Zhang Yuzhen, Hu Xiangduan, and Lu Hui. Tao Shu, Chen Luan, Wei Wenying, Ge Zai, and Duan Xiang wrote prefaces for her books, while Zhu Yidun wrote a postscript for them.
