Qiao Songnian (1815–1875) was a Qing-dynasty official and politician. His courtesy name was Jianhou, and Hechai was a sobriquet. He was a native of Xugou in Shanxi (present-day Qingxu County). Hechai is variously classified as a courtesy name or a sobriquet; Luomoting was a studio name or sobriquet; Qinke was his posthumous name.

Career

In the fifteenth year of the Daoguang reign (1835), he passed the jinshi examination, was appointed a secretary in the Ministry of Works, and was later promoted to langzhong. During the Xianfeng era, he served as prefect of Songjiang and Suzhou, as Salt Commissioner for Lianghuai, and as Provincial Administration Commissioner of Jiangning; in 1851 he served as an examiner for the Hunan provincial examination and also held the honorary title of an ancha shi (按察使). While serving as prefect of Suzhou, he followed Governor-General Yiliang in suppressing the Small Swords uprising in Shanghai.

During the Tongzhi era, he served as governor of Anhui and recruited volunteer forces to suppress the Nian armies; he also served as governor of Shaanxi. He ultimately reached the office variously styled Governor of the East River and Governor-General of the Hedong River Conservancy. Xu Xiaofeng was his friend, and Zong Yuanhan served under him. He died in 1875.

Works

His works include 《蘿藦亭札記》, 《蘿藦亭傳記》, 《蘿藦亭遺詩》, and 《緯麕》. The title is also found as 《蘿蘼亭札記》, in eight juan. He also authored 《論語淺解》 in four juan and compiled 《古微書存考》 and 《古微書訂誤》, as well as works in the 《河圖》 series such as 《河圖括地象》, 《河圖始開圖》, and 《河圖握矩起》.
