Dong Chuance

Dong Chuance (董傳策; 1530–1579), courtesy name Yuanhan (原漢, also written 元漢) and art name Youhai (幼海), was a Ming dynasty official. He was a native of Huating county in Songjiang prefecture (present-day Songjiang district, Shanghai); he is also recorded as a native of Shanghai, where his household was registered.

Life

He was a prefectural school student and passed the provincial examination; in 1550, the 29th year of the Jiajing reign, he took the jinshi degree, being placed eighty-third in the third class and receiving the grade of tong jinshi chushen (同進士出身), and was appointed a secretary of the Ministry of Justice. In 1558 he submitted a memorial impeaching Yan Song for six crimes; he was thrown into the imperial prison and tortured, and after an earthquake he was exiled to Nanning.

After the accession of the Longqing emperor he was recalled and restored to his former post, serving again as a secretary and then as a bureau director of the Ministry of Justice, and was promoted to vice chief minister of the Court of Imperial Stud; in 1568 he became chief minister of that court. In 1569 he was transferred to be chief minister of the Court of Imperial Entertainments at Nanjing, and in 1571 he rose to be chief minister of the Nanjing Court of Judicial Review, afterwards becoming junior vice minister of Works at Nanjing. In 1573 he was appointed junior vice minister of Rites at Nanjing; impeached by censorial officials for taking bribes, he was dismissed and returned home, and he was later killed by a household servant.

Family

His great-grandfather was Dong Yi (董懌), his grandfather Dong Jifang (董繼芳), his father Dong Tiren (董體仁), and his mother was of the Song family. An earlier ancestor, Dong Tian (1454–1527), served in the Ministry of Justice and rose to be vice minister of the Court of Judicial Review. He was the sixth in birth order among his brothers, with five elder brothers and seven younger brothers; his wife was of the Li family, and his son was Dong Wei (董瑋).

Associations

He exchanged letters with Lu Shusheng, Mao Kun, He Liangjun, Xu Xianzhong and Jiang Bao; he received a reply from Zhang Juzheng and poems and writings presented by Shen Kai, and after his death Jiang Bao composed a sacrificial address for him.

Works

His works include the memorial collection Zoushu jilüe (奏疏輯略, 1 juan), the travel record Qiyou manji (奇遊漫記, 4 juan), and the collections Caiwei ji (采薇集, 14 juan), Youzhen ji (幽貞集, 2 juan) and Yongyu ji (邕歈集, 6 juan). Other recorded titles are Bayu ji (巴歈集), Kuoranzi gao (廓然子稾), Dong Chuance zouyi (董傳策奏議), Quchen gao (蘧塵稿), Qulu gao (蘧盧槀), Yiyuan you (憶遠遊) and Shushi jingxian (述史景獻); he also wrote Kuoranzi wushu (廓然子五述) in one juan.
